About the Blog

Tech Tips & Timely Tidbits replaces a paper newsletter called “Tech Tuesdays” aimed at providing the teachers at Wagener-Salley High School with information about technology, new materials, and the sharing of ideas. My goal with switching to a blog vs. paper was to make the communication shift from information only to a true dialog with teachers and opening the discussion up to a wider audience so we can all learn from one another.

About Me

My name is Heather Loy and I am a library media specialist at Wagener-Salley High School, Wagener, South Carolina (USA).

I am relatively new to the education field, but not necessarily to my profession. I have been in the “book business” since high school, having worked at B. Dalton Bookseller for 9 years (when my store closed), then off again on again stints at Barnes & Nobel and Waldenbooks. Realizing that I couldn’t make a career (money) working retail, I decided to put my Bachelor of Science  in Office Administration to use and hired on at Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC and worked there for 6 years, while still holding part-time jobs at a bookstore (can’t beat those employee discounts!) AND as a substitute at Richland County Public Library.

I soon came to realize that insurance wasn’t my forte, and that working three jobs just to make ends meet was ridiculous, I enrolled in the College of Library and Information Science at USC. I intended to become a public librarian working in periodicals or reference, but had the good fortune to take a class taught by Dr. Pat Feehan.  Dr. Pat introduced me to the joys of Young Adult librarianship, and along with influences by Dr. Donna Shannon, I decided to give high school media specialist a try. Which is how I ended up working at Wagener-Salley right out of library school in 2002.
